The park is located in the Chihuahuan desert, home of some of the greatest diversity of cacti in the country. The park alone has 26 species of cactus, as well as several species of fern. There are some riparian woodland areas featuring conifers, pines, oaks and elm, though the park is largely dominated by shrubs and flowers. You will see hop hornbeam, columbine, larkspur, juniper, thimbleweed, clematis, poppy, mulberry and buckwheat, as well as hundreds of other species of shrubs and flowering plants. The desert is also home to many types of violets and other wildflowers, including nearly a hundred species in the sunflower family.
