Lower Cave Tour Details
This tour takes you to the lower cave to see "The Rookery," which is filled with cave pearls. You'll also see The Colonel Boles Formation and dozens of other breathtaking cave features. This region of Carlsbad Cavern was famously explored in 1923 by a group from the National Geographic Society. The Lower Cave Tour involves steep descents down 60 feet of ladders, and you'll have to lower yourself down backwards on a knotted rope to descend a steep slope near the beginning of the tour. The tour lasts three hours and costs $20 for adults and $10 for kids and seniors; it is open to anyone over the age of 12, but anyone younger than 16 must come with an adult. The tour is offered mid-June through mid-August, on Monday, Thursday and Friday, at 8:30 a.m.
