Green Lake Room Details
The Green Lake Room gets its name from a malachite-green pool located in the far corner of the room. Malachite is a mineral commonly found in conjunction with azurite, and famous for its green color. Historically, it has been used to make paint and as an artistic building material in sculptures. During the 1940s the U.S. military considered using Carlsbad Cavern as a nuclear fallout shelter. A nuclear bomb was dropped at a distant testing site, and officials observed the "lake" for ripples. When the water showed no movement, they determined that the cavern would be a safe place to hide should a nuclear attack occur. The plan was never carried out, however. You can visit the Green Lake Room on the King's Palace tour, or view it from above via the Natural Entrance self-guided tour.
