Big Room/Hall of the Giants Details
With a floor area of 357,470 square feet -- big enough to fit more than six football fields -- the Big Room was once considered the largest single cave room in the world. Others have since surpassed it, but the Big Room is still a breathtaking sight. This was the first room accessible to visitors when Jim White began giving cave tours in the 1920s. Also called the Hall of the Giants, the Big Room contains many of the cavern’s famous features, including the Bottomless Pit, a 140-foot deep hole in the middle of the floor; the Giant Dome, a 62-foot-tall stalactite; the Chrystal Dome, a stalactite that is still forming as water drips down it and into a surrounding pool; long, thin stalactites called The Chandelier; and the Rock of Ages, a viewing platform with an overlook of the Big Room and many of its features. A 1.25-mile, self-guided interpretive trail winds around the room, with several informational stops along the way. The trail is one of the most visited ones in the cave, and is largely paved and flat, with some unpaved or uneven sections. Much of the interpretive trail is accessible to people in wheelchairs or with mobility limitations, and there are accessibility guides to the big room available in the visitor center. You can access the big room either via elevator (accessible) or via the 1.25-mile hiking trail that leads down from the natural entrance.
