Plan Around Backcountry Information
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Backcountry Information Details
The only type of camping available in the park is backcountry camping. First, you'll need to pick up a free backcountry permit from the visitor center (permits are only available in-person, and cannot be reserved in advance). You have to be 18 years or older to get a permit, and you are limited to seven consecutive nights in the park. Camping is only permitted west of the Rattlesnake Canyon Trailhead and south of the Guadalupe Ridge Trail. Once you get two miles from the Guadalupe Ridge Trailhead, you can camp either north or south of the trail. All camps must be at least a half-mile from any road, 100 feet from any trail, and 300 feet from any water source. The maximum at any campsite is 10 people. If your group is bigger than 10, split up and establish two camps at least a half-mile apart. Car camping and RV camping are not allowed. There are very few water sources in the backcountry, so plan to pack in as much water as you'll need for your stay.
