Trees & Plants Details

Great Basin averages less than 10 inches of rain per year and, because it is at a high elevation, most of its water from the snow in the mountains. Most plants have become accustomed to the dry weather and flowering and budding plants will sometimes not open their seeds during drier years. Some seeds require two or three years of moisture to produce a sprout. The primary plants are sagebrush, cacti, junipers and succulents. The park's most famous plants are Bristlecone Pines which cover a beautiful area of the park. Because of the extremely unique desert environment, certain species of plant have adapted to survive making a special plant-viewing experience.
