Hiking
Hiking season is usually between June - September because access roads are usually closed due to snow in the 9,000 feet elevation during the other months.
Plan Around Hiking
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Hiking Details
If you plan on hiking in Great Basin National Park, be sure to visit between June and September, as the access roads are usually closed due to snow during the other months (they're up at over 9000 feet in elevation). If you come in the summer, you'll find over 60 miles of hiking trails and plenty of options for backcountry camping. Make sure to sign in at the trailhead registers, so parks services or rescuers can assist in any emergencies. Backpacking is encouraged, but be sure to sign in at one of the visitor centers for safety purposes. Groups of over 15 people need to split into smaller groups, and no more than six pack animals per group. Be sure to stay on the trail to preserve the integrity of the alpine region and its fragile ecosystem. Be aware of health hazards such as dehydration, alpine sickness and sun exposure when you're on extended backpacking trips or just day hikes. For daily updates on trail conditions, call (775) 234-7510.
