Water Safety Details
As unlikely as it may seem, water is the No. 1 cause of fatalities in Glacier National Park. Visitors should use extreme caution near water, especially swift, cold glacial rivers. Do not wade into or attempt to ford swift streams, and do not play on or take photographs from slippery rocks or logs, especially near waterfalls. Always wear a lifejacket while on a boat. Hypothermia can occur even in temperatures above freezing and can be caused by exposure to frigid water or getting soaked in sudden mountain storms. Prevent hypothermia by wearing water-resistant clothing, and wear clothing that wicks moisture away from your body. Minimize wind exposure, and if your clothes do become wet, change out of them if possible. The water in Glacier can pose one final risk: giardiasis, which is caused by a parasite (Giardia lamblia) found in lakes and streams. Persistent, severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps and nausea are common symptoms. When hiking, always carry water from one of the park's treated water systems, and if you plan to camp in the backcountry, follow the recommendations received with your permit. Bring water to a boil or use an approved filter before drinking.
