Terrain Safety Details
Glacier's variable terrain presents a number of different safety hazards and considerations for visitors. Mountainous terrain can pose a hazard when people fall after stepping off trails or roadsides, or when venturing onto steep slopes. Visitors should stay on designated trails and should not go beyond protective fencing or guardrails. Snowfields and glaciers can present serious hazards. Snowbridges may conceal deep crevasses on glaciers or large, hidden cavities under snowfields, then collapse under the weight of a hiker. As tempting as it may be, do not slide on snowbanks, as it's easy to lose control and slide into rocks or trees. Finally, if you're stopping along the road to take pictures, be mindful of moving traffic and pedestrians. Always pull over in a designated pullout, and stay behind guardrails and protective fencing.
