Auto Touring Details
Glacier National Park's roads wind through some of the country's most spectacular mountain scenery. Driving along these roads is all about the journey, not the destination, so take your time. If more than four cars stack up behind you while you are enjoying the views, please turn into a pullout to let your fellow travelers pass. Watch for wildlife along the road, especially early in the morning, at dusk, and at night. Watch for pedestrians along the road as well, and always obey the speed limit. Glacier's most famous road is Going-to-the-Sun Road. Portions of the route remain open year-round, although snowplowing the road is a monumental challenge. Upper portions of the road close during the winter. To help reduce congestion, there are vehicle size restrictions in effect. Vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet (including bumpers) or wider than 8 feet (including mirrors), are not allowed to drive between Avalanche Campground and Rising Sun. Vehicle and vehicle combinations over 10 feet high may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass to the Loop because of rock overhangs. As an alternate, the park's free shuttle system offers transportation along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Shuttle service generally begins July 1 and ends for the season on Labor Day.
