Apgar Campground Details

Located on the southern tip of Lake McDonald, Apgar Campground is Glacier's largest campground. It's also conveniently located near Apgar Village, where you can buy supplies and catch the free shuttle up Going-to-the-Sun Road. It is near popular trailheads such as the one for the Apgar Lookout trail, which takes you to a fire tower with stunning views of Lake McDonald. With easy access to the shores of the lake, you can spend your days boating or stand up paddleboarding (there are rental shops on the shore). You can ride the 1.5-mile paved bike trail to the Apgar Visitor Center and Village, where you can sign up for a horseback ride or Red Bus Tour. Half of the campground's 10 group sites, which accommodate nine to 24 people each, can be reserved up a year in advance, but individual sites in Apgar Campground are first-come, first-served. (The only campgrounds in the park where you can reserve individual sites in advance are Fish Creek and St. Mary Campgrounds.) That means you need to get there early in the morning to try to secure a spot during the busy summer months. Check-out is at noon, but many people leave earlier to explore the park. The campground features flush toilets and drinking water. There are picnic tables and fire rings at each camp site. Rangers hold programs nightly at the amphitheater. Individual sites accommodate a maximum of two tents each. Generators are permitted during limited hours. Two of Apgar's campsites are handicap-accessible. Apgar is in bear country, and black bears and grizzlies can frequent the campground. Food must be properly stored at all times, and garbage put in bear-proof trash cans. There are 194 sites and they cost $20/night during the summer.
