Tram System at Gateway Arch Details
The Tram Ride to the Top of Gateway Arch isn't just transportation-it's a journey through innovation, history, and jaw-dropping views. Designed by engineer Dick Bowser in the 1960s, the tram system is truly one-of-a-kind: a hybrid between an elevator and a Ferris wheel, custom-built to carry visitors 630 feet up the curve of the stainless-steel Arch. Each tram "train" features eight compact, futuristic capsules, with seating for up to five people per pod. During the four-minute ascent, the tram gently rotates to keep passengers upright while navigating the Arch's iconic curve. It's a snug but smooth ride, with a peek inside the Arch's structure through a small window-just enough to intrigue you before the real show begins. At the top, you'll step into a narrow observation room lined with 32 windows-16 on each side-offering panoramic views of St. Louis to the west and the Mississippi River and Illinois to the east. On a clear day, visibility stretches up to 30 miles in either direction. After soaking in the sights, you'll descend in the same tram for a three-minute ride back down. Pro Tips: The tram is not wheelchair accessible, and the small, enclosed pods may be uncomfortable for those with claustrophobia.
