Old Courthouse Details
Nestled within the heart of St. Louis, the Old Courthouse stands as a monumental testament to America's complex journey toward justice and equality. Constructed between 1839 and 1862, this architectural gem showcases the Greek Revival style, characterized by its stately columns and imposing dome. Beyond its architectural grandeur, the Old Courthouse has been the backdrop for pivotal legal battles that have profoundly influenced the nation's history. One of the most significant cases tried within its walls was that of Dred and Harriet Scott. In 1847, the Scotts, both enslaved African Americans, filed lawsuits seeking their freedom, arguing that their residence in free territories had liberated them from bondage. Although their initial victories were overturned, the case escalated to the U.S. Supreme Court, culminating in the infamous Dred Scott Decision of 1857. This ruling declared that African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be American citizens, further polarizing the nation and hastening the onset of the Civil War. The Old Courthouse also played a pivotal role in the fight for women's suffrage. In the 1870s, Virginia Minor, a staunch advocate for women's rights, sued for her right to vote after being denied registration. Her case, heard within these very courtrooms, challenged the legal interpretations of citizenship and voting rights, laying foundational stones for the eventual passage of the 19th Amendment. Today, the Old Courthouse is an integral part of the Gateway Arch, offering visitors a window into the past. Guests can explore restored courtrooms, immersive exhibits, and rich narratives that delve into the 19th-century judicial system and the individuals who dared to challenge societal norms. As of 2023, the courthouse is undergoing extensive renovations aimed at enhancing accessibility and preserving its historical integrity, with plans to reopen in 2025.
