When the Supreme Court ruled that African Americans had no rights as citizens, it deepened national tensions and pushed the country closer to civil war. But the struggle for equality didn't stop there-St. Louis became a proving ground for justice in many forms. In 1875, Virginia Minor, a local suffragist, took a bold stand for women's voting rights. Though her case was ultimately denied by the Supreme Court, it laid the groundwork for the 19th Amendment decades later. In the 20th century, St. Louis found itself at the center of another major legal victory-Shelley v. Kraemer (1948), which struck down racial housing covenants and opened doors for desegregation nationwide.
