Voyageurs National Park lies on the border between several ecosystems, namely the northern boreal forest and the temperate deciduous forest. You'll find conifer forests and hardwood forests, as well as marsh and bog ecosystems, lakeshores and rocky ridgelines. The forest composition is diverse: red pine, white pine, spruce, aspen, fir, birch, red maple, cedar, ash, elm oak, willow and jack pine. Along the shorelines you'll find many types of shrubs, like alder, serviceberry, chokeberry, dogwood, hazelnut, hawthorn, juniper, wintergreen, chokecherry, rose, sumac, gooseberry, elderberry, shinleaf and buckthorn, blueberry, strawberry and raspberry. The marshes, bogs and wetlands support a number of ferns, mosses, grasses and sedges including foxtail, bluegrass, panic-grass, hair-grass, creeping bent-grass, water sedge, golden sedge, long hair sedge, Dewey sedge and needle spike-rush, and several species of horsetail, cotton grass and bulrush. There is also a great variety of wildflowers in the park including pigweed, amaranth, baneberry, Western Yarrow, pussytoes, columbine, milkweed, basil, lily, orchid and many more.
