Paddling Details
Paddling, whether by kayak or canoe, is one of the best ways to experience Voyageurs National Park. The three large lakes-- Kabetogama Lake, Rainy Lake and Namakan Lake-- are shared by motorized and non-motorized boaters, though if you stick to the smaller coves you can easily find your own, quiet adventure. In addition to campsites, the park has day-use areas which you can reserve for a picnic lunch or a rest break. There are also dozens of sandy beaches, historic sites and scenic overlooks for you to stop and enjoy along the way. Some top paddling destinations include Hoist Bay, Kettle Falls, Obeson's Fish Camp, Casareto Cabin, Little American Island and the Ellsworth Rock Gardens. You can also opt to travel to one of the many smaller lakes in the heart of the Kabetogama peninsula. These are all non-motorized, and many only have one campsite, which means that you'll practically have the lake to yourself. All campsites are reservation only, and all interior lakes have park-owned boats for you to rent. In order to prevent the spread of invasive species, the park service does not allow the use of personal watercraft on these inland lakes. You can reserve a canoe or kayak ahead of time with your campsite. Overnight rentals cost $28 per night/day and day-only rentals are $12 per day. Not only is paddling a fun activity itself; it also allows you to access to fishing and hiking that is not accessible from the mainland. Each of the park's three visitor centers has a free boat launch and parking lot, where you can leave your car for the duration of your trip.
