Kettle Falls Details

In the 1800s, this section of the American Channel between Rainy Lake and Namakan Lake was a hub of hunting, fishing, and trapping activity. Both Native American residents and European fur trappers traversed these waters as a part of their route along the boundary waters. Native Americans used the falls to fish for sturgeon, while fur trappers landed on the islands in search of pelts to sell or trade. In 1910, a dam was constructed, and soon after that, the Kettle Falls Hotel was built. The hotel catered mostly to the construction workers building the dam, as well as loggers, fur trappers, and miners. The hotel was rebuilt by the park service in 1967, and today visitors can stay the night, or simply visit for lunch and a walk around the dam observation deck.
