Ingersoll Estate Details

In the 1920s, wealthy philanthropist William P. Ingersol constructed a summer home on a remote island just southeast of Grassy Bay, in Crane Lake. The property included a central family residence, several outlying guesthouses, an outbuilding, and gardens. The site is particularly significant because of the architecture of the main family house: it is an E.F. Hodgson Kit House, a prefabricated structure that could be easily transported by boat and constructed on the remote island. Sears and Aladdin made similar prefabricated homes, though the Hodgsons are especially valued because so few of them remain intact on their original site of construction. Because of this, as well as the island's representation of 1920s recreational culture in the Voyageurs area, the Ingersoll Estate has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can access Ingersoll Island by boat, from Sandy Point Lake via the Crane Lake boat launch.
