Ellsworth Rock Gardens Details
Located on the shores of the Kabetogama Peninsula along Kabetogama Lake, just across from Custover Island, this artistic sanctuary is the work of Jack Ellsworth. Ellsworth was a contractor who spent summers on the Kabetogama Peninsula from 1944 to 1965. During those summers, he transformed a rocky outcropping into a garden of wildflowers and rough stone sculptures. The park service has maintained the gardens, and today they remain a popular place for visitors to picnic, or simply relax. Many of the flowers that bloom today are originals, planted by Ellsworth himself over 50 years ago. In its heyday, the garden boasted over 13,000 lilies. The Ellsworth summer home no longer stands, but in its place the park service has erected a picnic area and large stone fireplace. You can only access this garden by boat.
