Tree and Plants Details
The mostly-undeveloped island provides the perfect home for myriad trees, including balsam fir, white spruce, paper birch, aspen and mountain ash, all of which typically grown along the islands shoreline. Inland, where the conditions are warmer and drier, youll find sugar maple and yellow birch, and in the low lands, white cedar, black spruce, tamarack, red maple, black ash and three types of pine trees. Ferns are abundant on Isle Royale, as are more than 600 flowering plants that begin blooming early in the season through September. Some of the more photogenic flowers to capture include ladyslipper orchids, bunchberries, gay-wings, harebells and twinflowers, as well as calypso orchids, ladies-tresses orchids, asters and goldenrod.
