Transportation Services Details
Unless you have your own private boat to get to and from the park, you'll need to use one of the park-authorized modes of transportation to access Isley Royale National Park: four ferries and one seaplane. The park suggests making reservations as soon as you know when you'll visit, as services do fill us, especially during the peak season, from late-July through mid-August. The National Park Service-owned and operated Ranger III is the largest passenger ferry providing transportation to and from the park. The 128-passenger ferry provides annual overnight services from the end of May through early-September, and runs from Houghton (where the parks visitor center is found) to Rock Harbor within the park on Tuesdays and Fridays, returning from Rock Harbor to Houghton on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Reservations for the 73-mile, five-hour journey can be made by calling (906) 482-0984; fare information can also be found by calling that phone number. The passenger ferry Isle Royale Queen IV runs day and overnight trips between Copper Harbor, Michigan and Rock Harbor with the park, making the journey in just over three hours. Visit the [website](http://www.isleroyale.com) for schedules, fare information and to make reservations. Two additional passenger ferry options are available from Grand Portage, Minnesota Voyaguer II and Seahunter III. The Voyageur II has a number of pick-up and drop-off points on the parks north and south shores, and offers overnight trips. Likewise, the Seahunter III also operates from Grand Portage, however provides day- and overnight trips to Windigo on the southwest end of the park. For both of these ferries, visit the [website](http://www.grand-isle-royale.com/) for schedules, fare information and to make reservations. Lastly, Isle Royale Seaplanes offer day and overnight trips between Houghton and Rock Harbor on the northeast end of the park, and Windigo on the southwest end. The one-way flight time is just 35 minutes. Visit the [website](http://isleroyaleseaplanes.com/) for schedules, fare information and to make reservations. Regardless of which option you choose, there is parking where you can leave your car for the duration of your trip.
