Paddling Details

Experienced paddlers canoes and kayaks will love the miles of waters found along the parks lakes, bays and islands. Before starting out, be advised that canoes should be at least 15-feet long, and sea kayaks are recommended over recreational kayaks, and should be at least 15-feet, eight-inches long for open water. Paddlers should be advised that Lake Superior is known for its cold temperatures, sudden squalls and fog, and should be prepared for all scenarios. Also note that all paddlers must have and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device, and the park suggests also having along: a First Aid kit, an extra paddle, a self-contained stove, insect repellent, a compass, 50 feet of lashing line, maps, rain gear, extra food, a tent, a sleeping bag and pad, a bucket, waterproof matches and dry storage containers. If you have your own canoe or kayak with you, ferries can transport it for you for a fee; rentals are available via a few of the ferry lines, as well as in Rock Harbor and Windigo.
