Minong Mine Details
Located just west of McCargoe Cove camground, Minong Mine and its supply of copper has been drawing miners of all kinds for 4,500 years. It began as a Native American mine and they would use the copper to make spearheads and when modern copper mining took over in the mid-1800s, 249 tons of copper were extracted from the mine between 1875-1885. The largest copper nugget ever extracted was 5,720 lbs. Today, the mine is a fun place to explore with old railroad tracks, ore carts and mine shafts from the heyday of the late 1800s. Take caution when exploring these artifacts as mine shafts are never fully secure, especially those that have been abandoned for so many years.
