Kamloops Details
The Kamloops is considered to be a "ghost ship." It sank in 1927, but its remains were not discovered until 1977. No crew survived, and no one knows quite why it sank. The 250-foot freight ship was built in England in 1924 for the Canada Steamship Lines, a shipping company out of Montreal. In December of 1927, the Kamloops was accompanying the Quedoc on an end-of-season shipping run from Montreal to Fort William, carrying machinery from a paper mill, as well as pipe, tar, shoes and fencing materials. On December 6, in the middle of a stormy, foggy night, the Quedoc saw a dark mass approaching and turned quickly to avoid it, sounding a warning siren. The Quedoc arrived at Fort William the next morning unscathed. The Kamloops did not. Several other ships had also been stranded or gone missing in the bad weather. By December 12 all of them had been found, except the Kamloops. A search began, but the winter freeze ended it quickly. Fisherman at Isle Royale found remains of some of the crew and machinery, which washed ashore in the spring. The entire wreckage, however, would not be found in 1977. Remarkably, it remains almost perfectly in tact. The wreckage is located between 175 and 260 feet, so deep that diving is considered too risky. The site is not marked with any buoys.
