Isle Royale Moose and Wolf Study Details
The Isle Royale Moose and Wolf Study is a scientific research program, funded by the National Science Foundation, Michigan Tech and the National Park Service. The purpose of the study is to learn more about "the ecology of predation," through the life and habits of Isle Royale's moose and wolf populations. By studying these creatures, we get a glimpse into the way that wolf predation affects the population size of their prey, how moose teeth carry information about levels of air pollution over time, why wolves sometimes only eat part of the food they kill, the effects of inbreeding and genetics on overall population health and much more. The project began in 1958, and has seen dramatic rises and falls in the populations of both animals. New discoveries are still being made each year. They study also offers college internships, and the opportunity to join a moose watching expedition and be a participant in the process of collecting research.
