History Details
Because of its harsh conditions, people rarely called the island home, save the lighthouse keepers who kept watch over the flames to keep ships traveling Lake Superior safe. Remnants of this bygone area still stand: lighthouses and cabins of lightkeepers and their assistants. In the 19th century, the island was mined extensively for copper, though carbon testing shows that indigenous people may have mined for copper as long as 5,700 years ago. Isle Royale National Park was established in 1940; additional designations followed when it was named a National Wilderness Area in 1976, and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980.
