In 1924, a Canadian freight ship named Glenlyon was transporting a shipment of wheat when a storm broke. After several days spent sheltering behind the Welcome Islands, Captain Taylor decided that the winds had died down enough to push onward. No sooner had they hoisted anchor than the winds returned, gusting upwards of 60 miles per hour. Capt. Taylor steered the ship towards Siskiwit Bay. This sheltered inlet was a popular stopping point among boat captains when the weather got rough. The winds were too strong, though, and just as the ship was passing Menagerie Island, it ran aground on a shoal. The captain and crew waited through the night for the nearby Glensannox and Glenlinnie to come to their aid. All crew members transferred over onto these rescue boats, followed by 75,000 bushels of wheat. Coast guard tried for several weeks to float the Glenlyon off the shoal, but the boat eventually showed too much damage and was deemed a lost cause. It stayed there all winter, and in the spring it broke in two and succumbed to the icy waters at last. Today, the ship's bow can be found on the inside of the Glenlyon Shoal, and the stern can be found on the outside of the shoal. Highlights include the propeller, boilers, engine, drive shaft and the remains of some passenger cabins. The site is one of nine in the park marked by white mooring buoys with a blue stripe. The mooring here is attached to a sinker at 40 feet deep. Only registered dive boats are allowed, with a maximum of two boats per mooring. All divers must check in at one of the park visitor centers before embarking.
