Fishing Details
Fishermen and fisherwomen will find fishing in the park is worth their time and patience. Whether on a boat of on a shoreline, the recreational fishing opportunities within Isle Royale National Park are abundant. Before casting a line, however, note that a Michigan fishing license is required for anyone 17 and older who is fishing in Lake Superior, or the parks narrow bays and harbors. Licenses are not required for anyone under the age of 17, or within the parks inland waters. Fishing licenses are available on the island during the season when concession services are open. Some guidelines to consider when fishing in Isle Royale National Park include: bait is limited to fish and/or fish parts caught within park waters; use only artificial lures in inland waters (required); catch only what you plan to keep or eat; and know the minimum and maximum legal sizes so you can release quickly if the fish doesn't meet the parameters. Only barbless hooks and artificial lures are allowed in all inland lakes, streams and creeks. Brook trout are catch and release only in Isle Royale Lake Superior Waters, which extend 4.5 miles away from the island; catch and release only of the brook trout in all lakes, streams and creeks.
