Sharpening Rock Details
The Fort Hill Trail, which starts at the Captain Edward Penniman House, leads to Sharpening Rock, one of the few tangible reminders that Native Americans inhabited this area long before the Pilgrims arrived. Also known as Indian Rock, this large boulder was once used by the Nauset tribe to sharpen weapons and tools. You can still see the deep grooves and circles where stone axes were whetted. The rock was originally discovered in a marsh but moved to Skiff Hill to make it more accessible to visitors.
