Leash Requirements and Beach Access: Pets must be kept on a 6-foot leash at all times, a rule that is strictly enforced year-round, even during the quieter month of February. This regulation helps prevent disturbances to wildlife and ensures pets remain safe and under control. When it comes to enjoying the seashore's beaches with your pet, there are clear guidelines to maximize fun while minimizing impact. Although pets are not allowed to linger in areas protected by lifeguards during duty hours, they are welcome to be walked through these areas to reach parts of the beach where they can enjoy the sand and surf freely. The boundaries of lifeguard-protected areas are clearly marked, making it easy to identify where pets can roam more freely. Sensitive Areas and Seasonal Restrictions: Certain areas, particularly those designated as shorebird nesting habitats, are off-limits to pets to ensure these vulnerable species are not disturbed. For example, the area south of the entrance to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is typically closed to pets from as early as mid-March until early September to protect nesting shorebirds. However, pets are welcome on the north side of Coast Guard Beach during this period, allowing pet owners to still enjoy the beach's natural beauty with their companions. Freshwater ponds become pet-friendly from October 16 to May 14, while the West and Sunset Horse Trails and Head of the Meadow Bicycle Trail are open to pets year-round, offering diverse landscapes for walking and exploration.
