Tatnic Woods Preserve Details

Easy trails wind through a surprising mix of vernal pools and old homesteads on the Tatnic Woods Preserve. Created from depressions due to soft wetland grounds, vernal pools have a swamp-like feel that draws in the amphibians and reptiles of the forest. Surrounded by tall stands of oak-pine and hickory trees, the couple miles of trails often use wood and rock to create muddied crossings. Interestingly, besides nesting turtles and other animals, shagbark hickory trees are also found here. Scattered throughout the wooded grounds, these trees are an uncommon sight in Maine.
