With multiple freshwater and saltwater bodies of water, Maine hosts a multitude of large freshwater ponds known as "Great Pond," and the Great Pond of Cape Elizabeth is indeed large. Totaling 40 acres, the Great Pond Trail provides for an exceptional way to experience the pond and its many habitats. Only a mile and a half, the pathway runs through woods, fields, and over swampy areas with boardwalk crossings. Views of the pond are able to be seen at multiple places along the moderately easy trail. Visitors will also notice evidence of beavers and birds with dams and nests along the way.
