Russell Pond Trail Details

This trail provides access to the heart of Baxter State Park and the many recreational opportunities around Russell Pond. From Roaring Brook Campground head over the wooden bridge which crosses Roaring Brook. After 1.1 miles, you will junction with the Sandy Stream Pond Trail. Shortly after, the trail runs parallel to the shores of Whidden Ponds. Numerous toads and snakes are sure to be found along the trail as it speeds towards the junction of Wassataquoik Stream Trail. After a brief stream crossing, the trail continues north along the eastern slope of the Russell Mountain crossing over two small streams before encountering Wassataquoik Stream. At times this can be a challenging stream crossing, and conditions can quickly change so it's important to always check-in with the ranger at Roaring Brook Campground. Once across the stream, you are now in what was once known as "New City" - an old logging camp.
