Dudley Trail Details

This trail was first blazed in the early 1900's by (Mark) Leroy Dudley, the famous guide and storyteller of Chimney Pond. It ascends Pamola Peak over very exposed boulders, some with deep crevices, and at a very steep grade. The trail starts left of the Rangers cabin at Chimney Pond Campground. The trail heads northeast through some scrub trees and quickly begins it's very steep ascent. At 0.4 mile a spur trail leads left to some small caverns which are known as Pamola Caves. The caverns can often be wet and the spur trail can be difficult at times, but the caverns at the end makes the trip worthwhile. Legend has it that the caverns are the home of Pamola - the God of Thunder and the Protector of the mountain. Back at the signpost, the trail continues its vertical ascent with hand over hand climbing, eventually rising above the treeline. As you proceed to the summit you encounter Index Rock - a dramatic outcrop which can be seen from all around the Great Basin. At Pamola Peak, you encounter the Helon Taylor Trial and the start of the Knife Edge Trail.
