Backcountry Sites Overview Details
There are many backcountry campsites in Baxter State Park available for backpacking use by visitors. (L) signifies Lean-to; (T) signifies Tent site. Unless otherwise noted tentsite and lean-to capacities are 4 persons. Each site has a fire ring (except Davis Pond), an outhouse, and a water source that requires treating. The policy for use of backcountry sites allows for advance reservations to be made thru the mail or in person at Baxter Park Headquarters in Millinocket. It is recommended that backpackers using outlying sites limit themselves to ten (10) miles between sites. A detailed map is recommended for planning & extended hiking in Baxter State Park. Please be advised that cut-off times have been established for leaving trailheads to hike into backcountry sites. Allow 4 - 5 hours of daylight if leaving for Hudson or N.W. Cove 2:00 p.m. - Leaving for Russell Pond and surrounding areas, May - August 5:00 p.m. - Leaving for Chimney Pond, May - August As daylight hours shorten in the fall, posted cut-off time is earlier for these areas. Please verify these cut-off times with the reservation office and make your plans accordingly.
