Acadia is home to ferns, over 80 species of freshwater plants, a variety of grasses, marine algae, plenty of moss, and an abundant array of wildflowers--and trees, of course. Acadia's lakes, ponds, and streams are home to freshwater plants and seven species can be found on Maine's list of Endangered and Threatened Plants. The damp, cool environment of Acadia lends itself nicely for both mosses and ferns to cultivate. Between Acadia's bold mountains and sharp cliffs, you can explore the Park's floor to see these plants flourishing in the shade created from the tree canopy above. As far as trees go, spruces, red spruces, and white spruces dominate the landscape, with the white spruces occupying much of the land along the shore. However, you will also find pines, birch, oak, maple, aspen, and hemlock among a smattering of other species.
