Sargent Mountain South Ridge Trail Details
This hike begins on a carriage trail leaving the Brown Mountain Gate House, one of the Park's two gate houses built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Ascending gradually, it rises over the wooded side of Cedar Swamp Mountain before dipping down and crossing a small brook. For hikers interested in reaching Cedar Swamp's summit, a spur trail is available before continuing the steady climb up Sargent. The mountain's unique summit is very similar to the Tablelands of Maine's Katahdin Mountain; flat, wide open, and filled with wildflowers and stunted evergreens. On a clear day, panoramic views of Somes Sound, Isle au Haut, and even Camden are possible. Trailhead: From the Brown Mountain Parking Area, take carriage road to junction #18 and turn right. At carriage road junction #19, turn right. Trailhead is .7 miles from the parking area.
