Acadia's Mather Memorial Plaque is located at the top of Cadillac Mountain - on a low granite ledge on the Cadillac Summit Loop Trail facing the parking lot The plaque honors Stephen T. Mather - the National Park Service's first director. These exact plaques are scattered throughout the National Park System and each bear the inscription: HE LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. DEFINING AND ESTABLISHING THE POLICIES UNDER WHICH ITS AREAS SHALL BE DEVELOPED AND CONSERVED UNIMPAIRED FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. THERE WILL NEVER COME AN END TO THE GOOD THAT HE HAS DONE.
