Lake Wood Details

Lake Wood isn't exactly a secret -- there's even a Lake Wood Pond Road providing access -- but it's a bit off the beaten path in the northern part of the Park and tends to attract more locals than tourists. Long and skinny, this 16-acre pond has a small beach and, with a depth of up to 11 feet, cool waters for a refreshing swim. Several species of fish inhabit the pond, including brook trout, rainbow smelts, American eels, white suckers, minnows, banded killifish, and pumpkinseed sunfish. Informal trails lead around the edge of the pond to some granite outcrops serving as a natural platform for lake plunges. Skinny-dipping is not unheard-of here, despite Park Service prohibitions. There are no lifeguards on duty, so people swim at their own risk. Dogs are not allowed on the beach. Lake Wood Pond Road is off Crooked Road about a mile west of Route 3 in Hulls Cove.
