Kayaking Details

If you like being out on the water, kayaking is a must on a trip to Acadia National Park, as the Park has scores of miles of pristine coastline. If you are knew to paddling, it's recommended you use a private company for a guided tour of Frenchman Bay. If you're a seasoned 'yacker (kayaker), feel free to head out on your own, launching at one of the public boat launches in Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, or Southwest Harbor. You'll also find public access at Seal Cove, Bass Harbor, Seal Harbor Beach, Hadley Point, and Bar Island Gravel Bar. Those of you not familiar with Maine's coastal waters should know that the tides do exist--and will reach up to a difference of 12 feet between low and high tide. If pulling your boat up on an island beach, be sure you know whether the tide is coming in or going out. Also, you will be paddling on the open ocean, so know that weather can change any time, including the "wicked Maine fog" that can roll in.
