Great Notch Trail Details

The Great Notch Trail is a moderate route that traverses the southern face of Western Mountain, offering a less strenuous yet scenic path through the rugged terrain. Though not the most remarkable in terms of scenery or accessibility, it is the most moderate trail in this section of the park, making it an appealing option for those seeking a steady ascent without the steep challenges of other nearby routes. Also known as the Gilley Trail, the route begins at Gilley Field, an open area that serves as the starting point for various trails in the region. From here, the path gradually ascends into the Great Notch, a deep and rugged pass that separates the two prominent peaks of Bernard Mountain and Mansell Mountain. The trail meanders through dense forest, featuring classic Acadia landscapes of mossy boulders, towering conifers, and glimpses of the surrounding ridges. Hikers often use the Great Notch Trail as a connector to other trails leading to either peak, with the most common destination being Mansell Mountain. While the notch itself is relatively sheltered, those who continue upward are rewarded with stunning summit views overlooking Long Pond, Blue Hill Bay, and the surrounding wilderness. This trail provides a quieter, more secluded experience compared to Acadia’s more popular routes, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful forest hike. Its moderate difficulty and strategic location within the park’s western mountains make it a valuable link in the greater network of Acadia’s trails, offering both a standalone hike and a gateway to further exploration. Trailhead: Gilley Field.
