Goat Trail Details
This trail (formerly known as the Norumbega Mountain Trail) climbs Norumbega Mountain, which parallels the eastern edge of Somes Summit. The mountain provides great views of the only fjord on the east coast as well as the western mountains of Mount Desert Island. The trail is level near the mountain's base, but gets significantly harder as it begins its ascent. This short, steep climb to the summit is aptly named the Goat Trail because the sunny open ledges require hikers to have mountain-goat characteristics to scramble up Norumbega's ridges. Trailheads From Brown Mountain Parking Lot, off of State Route 198.
