Norumbega Mountain Details
Visitors can access Norumbega Mountain, a somewhat isolated peak on the east shore of Somes Sound, via the Goat Trail (formerly known as the Norumbega Mountain Trail). The short, steep climb up the mountain offers great views of the only fjord on the east coast and the western mountains of Mount Desert Island. Norumbega is the Algonquin word for "quiet waters." The mountain was formerly known as Brown Mountain and opposite its southeast base is the Brown Mountain Gate/Carriage House, a The Tudor-revival structure designed by prominent New York architect Grovesnor Atterbury that was completed in 1932.
