Bear Island Lighthouse Details

Just outside the mouth of Northeast Harbor, Bear Island Light perches atop this small island's steep southern cliff. The original light station was built in 1839. The current 31-foot high structure was constructed in 1889 and included a fog bell rung during low visibility. The lighthouse is on Acadia National Park grounds, but is privately leased and closed to the public. You can best view the lighthouse on boat cruises from Northeast Harbor. Seasonal boat rentals are also available in the village of Manset which is part of Southwest Harbor.
