Long Pond Details
The larger of Mount Desert Islands' two "Long Ponds" (the smaller one is off Route 3 near Seal Harbor), this deep lake reaches a depth of up to 113 feet. Fishing and boating are permitted here, including motorized boats. You can rent canoes and kayaks here as well, but be aware that the depth of this glacier-gouged pond keeps the water pretty chilly. Access is from the northern end of Route 102. Swimming is prohibited near the pumping station at the south end of the pond, which serves as a drinking-water supply for Southwest Harbor, but you can swim at Duck Rock, an outcropping located on the west side of the pond and accessible via a shoreline hiking trail.
