Auto Touring Details
Acadia's 27-mile Park Loop Road is ideal for touring the park via automobile. The road, which starts at Hulls Cove Visitor Center, provides easy access to many of the Park's most beautiful and popular sights, including Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond, and the summit of Cadillac Mountain. There are also multiple pull-offs where you can enjoy Acadia's varied and breathtaking scenic vistas. You'll need to pay the park entrance fee in order to use the road. Be aware that Park Loop Road is mostly one-way -- including along its popular oceanfront segment -- so there is a bit of a commitment involved once you start your journey. Speed limit is generally 35 miles per hour. Most of the road is closed for the winter, generally from December 1 to April 15. Severe weather can cause the roads to close sooner or reopen later, however, a scenic one-mile oceanfront segment of the road stays open year-round. You can access it from Schooner Head Road, two miles south of downtown Bar Harbor. You can also access Jordan Pond by car in the winter by taking Route 3 to Jordan Pond Road.
