Backcountry Information Details
With 37 square miles of backcountry, it's easy to get away from the crowds and enjoy the sunny side of the park. More than a dozen primitive campsites are available in the backcountry and along the Green and Nolin Rivers. 66 miles of trails allow access to the park's backcountry for hikers and horseback riders, with mountain biking allowed on select trails, as well. You can also access the backcountry from the water and camp on islands or the floodplains of the Green and Nolin Rivers. Free Backcountry Use Permits are required for all backcountry camping and are available at the Visitor Center Information Desk. Before your backcountry trip, leave your plans and expected date of return with someone at home, familiarize yourself with alternate routes or take-out areas in case of emergency, and follow Leave No Trace outdoor ethics when in the backcountry. Contact the park, or ask at the visitor center, about current conditions and closures. Be aware that river levels can fluctuate, and flooding is possible.
