Native Peoples and Early Settlers Details
Long before Indiana Dunes became a national park, the region was home to Indigenous peoples who relied on its diverse ecosystems for survival. The Potawatomi were among the last Native American groups to inhabit the area, using the dunes, wetlands, and forests for hunting, fishing, and gathering. Their deep spiritual and cultural connection to the land is evident in ancient trails and burial mounds that remain part of the landscape today. European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, bringing with them significant changes. The expansion of fur trading and logging industries led to the forced removal of Native tribes, altering the region's ecological and social fabric. By the mid-1800s, small communities of settlers had taken root, farming the land and using the dunes' natural resources for industrial growth. As railroads and towns developed, the once-secluded dunes became increasingly accessible, setting the stage for both exploitation and future preservation efforts.
