Birdwatching & Wildlife Spotting Details

Indiana Dunes is a premier birdwatching destination, drawing enthusiasts from across the country to witness its diverse avian population. With more than 350 species of birds recorded, the park serves as a critical stopover point for migratory birds traveling along the Mississippi Flyway. Spring and fall migrations bring an incredible variety of warblers, raptors, and shorebirds to the region, making these seasons ideal for birdwatching. Prime locations for spotting birds include the Great Marsh Trail, which offers an excellent chance to see herons, egrets, and even elusive sandhill cranes. The Heron Rookery Trail is another hotspot, known for its nesting colonies of great blue herons. During winter, visitors can observe bald eagles soaring over the park's waterways, while summer months bring an array of songbirds and waterfowl to the wetlands. Other wildlife in the park includes white-tailed deer, red foxes, and river otters, which can often be spotted in the park's woodlands and along its waterways. The dunes are also home to a variety of amphibians and reptiles, including rare species such as the Eastern box turtle. To maximize wildlife encounters, visitors should bring binoculars, remain quiet while observing animals, and visit early in the morning or at dusk when wildlife is most active.
