Birds of the Dunes Details
Indiana Dunes is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in the Midwest, thanks to its location along the Mississippi Flyway, a major migratory route. Over 350 bird species pass through the park annually, making spring and fall migration seasons particularly spectacular. Great Marsh Trail and Heron Rookery are two of the best spots for spotting migratory songbirds, herons, and egrets. Raptors such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and red-tailed hawks are frequently seen soaring above the dunes. Summer brings an abundance of waterfowl and shorebirds to the park's wetlands, while winter offers sightings of owls and other hardy species. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival in May is a must-attend event, featuring expert-led hikes and educational programs.
